How this works

What can you expect when you work with us as your doula?

Choosing a doula is not a decision to take lightly. To help you make this choice, read on to understand more about the sessions and what you can expect from us as your doula.

That all-important connection

Every mother-doula relationship we develop starts with 2 videocalls with Kim and Natalie. During these conversations we see whether there is a mutual click between you as a mother-to-be, your partner and us as your doula. After all, it is extremely important that you feel completely safe and at home with your birth team.

If the answer is a resounding YES, we will
dive deep into your world. We will discuss your wishes, fears, beliefs, knowledge of your body and all kinds of practical matters regarding birth. There is one clear goal: to prepare you – and your partner – for the big day.

You will experience that you are in control of your birth and at the same time 'fluid' enough for all the twists and turns that may come.

Your sessions with us

We’ll have several prenatal sessions in the comfort of your home to prepare you for birth (four if you’ve chosen the essential and nurturing doula care, five for the hypnobirth doula care).

In session 1, we’ll focus on your wishes, fears and beliefs. This often inspires softening and trust as we look at these through a gentle, loving lens.

In session 2 and 3, we will discuss everything about birth, such as: the 4 stages of birth, physiology of the body, hormones, information about interventions and pain relief and how to cope with contractions. You’ll also get some vital tools and tips you and your partner can use on the day. It’s essentially a 1:1 birth course.

In session 4,
we’ll go through different hands-on techniques and breathing, handy tools and tips for you and your partner, postpartum information etc. We’ll also ask you to walk us through your home, so we know where everything is and how we can support you. Even if you’re planning a hospital birth, this is important, as your labor will begin at home. It means that when labor starts, you’ll be able to focus completely on yourself, your partner and your baby, safe in the knowledge that we have everything we need to support you.

From 38 weeks, we will be on call 24 hours a day so we can be by your side when you need us. Some moms want a doula to be with them from the start of labor. Others prefer to wait  –  staying in their little bubble with their partner in early labor, and then calling us once it becomes more intense.

One of us will be with you from whenever you choose, until your baby is safely in your arms – however long that takes.

Postpartum Support

Once your baby is safely with you, We’ll still be there to support you as much (or little) as you’d like. We can visit you at home to facilitate a loving, belly massage with chamomile wrap, prepare a yoni steam or make a nutritious placenta smoothie to help you recover. We’ll also be on hand by phone for the first six weeks – you can call or text any time.

Even after that, you’re not on your own. Many moms keep in touch during the first year whenever they need a listening ear. We want to make sure you and your baby are doing well.
